| Helen Evans, Thames Valley Horsewatch Co-ordinator and Police Volunteer, carried out some research into the number horses found straying in the Thames Valley area in a year.
Helen also observed the procedure for coping with such incidents, which amounted to just closing roads because 'officers were not trained to handle horses'. Helen, with the help and funding from The Horse Trust, put together a course for police officers on how to handle horses which was piloted in the Amersham area. The initial 'can we be bothered' reaction soon changed and the courses were heralded a huge success by everyone. All trainees were given a headcollar and rope as a giveaway at the end of their courses. |
